Can you briefly tell us about Oysterboys?
Oysterboys Amsterdam focuses on high-end catering, events and brand activations. We work in and around Amsterdam, and within the city we use our cargo bike. It allows us to reach event locations quickly and set up easily in places that are hard to access by car, such as the canals. It makes us flexible and highly visible, and at the same time it serves as a moving advertising board. In other words, it’s three benefits in one.

Why did you choose a cargo bike?
In Amsterdam, a cargo bike is simply the most practical way to get around. You can move from place to place quickly, and you can set up in spots that a car can’t easily reach. We also have a car that we can turn into a mobile bar, but that doesn’t work well on the canals. With the cargo bike we can take everything with us and we stand out in a positive way.

What does a typical workday look like at Oysterboys?
We start the day with a team briefing. The staff members who are working that day come to the office to collect the materials and pick up fresh oysters. Everything goes into the cargo bike, and then we head to the event location where we set up the bar. After that, we get to work and start shucking. Sometimes we have multiple events in a single day, and we keep going until all assignments are completed.

How does the bike help you increase your visibility in the city?
When we cycle through the city, the bike attracts a lot of attention. People often ask, “Do you have oysters with you? Can I try one?” That happens surprisingly often. We also notice that the visibility pays off commercially: after a long day of cycling I often come home to find new quote requests in my inbox. The bike immediately shows people who we are and what we do.

Can you show what you typically carry in your cargo bike?
We always bring our oysters, in different varieties and sizes so people can choose their favourite. We also always carry Noilly Prat, a French vermouth that we serve after someone eats an oyster, just like they do in France. In addition, we bring oyster belts so we can easily move through a crowd, and of course vinaigrette, lemon, pepper and Tabasco. And if someone wants it, we can also bring champagne, cheese boards and other extras. The best part is that it all fits perfectly in the bike.

What is your favourite Urban Arrow moment?
My favourite moment happened last summer when I was cycling through the Jordaan after an event. I had accidentally ordered too many oysters, so I had some left over. A man on a terrace shouted, “Hey, do you have oysters with you?” I did, so I decided to serve them right there on the terrace. It turned into a very fun and spontaneous afternoon. It only happened because they saw me cycling by, and that makes it one of my favourite memories.
